For more than 10 summers, we have been serving our “Meal of Simplicity,” a simple lunch meal of beans, rice, and tortillas with a peanut butter and jelly option. We do this for two reasons: first, the meal is used as an educational tool to prompt discussion about global poverty and what standard fare is for much of the world; second, funds saved by not preparing a more expensive meal are donated to missions combating hunger in the United States and around the world.
This year we are excited to partner with Heifer International. Heifer’s mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. Heifer does this by providing appropriate livestock, training and related services to small-scale farmers and communities worldwide.
By eating simply for just one meal each week, our campers will be able to provide funds to help make a change for many impoverished communities around the globe. If you would like more information about Heifer International or would like to donate money towards the Meal of Simplicity project this year, please contact the camp office at 813.685.4224.
