For nearly two decades of summer camp, we have been serving our “Meal of Simplicity,” a simple lunch meal of beans, rice, and tortillas with a peanut butter and jelly option. We do this for two reasons: first, the meal is used as an educational tool to prompt discussion about global poverty and what standard fare is for much of the world; second, funds saved by not preparing a more expensive meal are donated to missions combating hunger in the United States and around the world.
Last year we partnered with Heifer International and raised just over $900 in the course of the summer. Heifer’s mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. Heifer does this by providing appropriate livestock, training and related services to small-scale farmers and communities worldwide.
We will announce this year’s Meal of Simplicity mission recipient to our summer campers at lunch on Wednesday. Join us at camp to find out what mission partner we will be supporting by eating one simple meal!
By eating simply for just one meal each week, our campers will be able to provide funds to help make a change for many impoverished communities around the globe. If you would like to donate money towards the Meal of Simplicity project this year, please contact the camp office at 813.685.4224.
